- THE TRAINER
Peter Schnurrer
Peter Schnurrer is the founder and lead trainer of Monarch Canine Academy. His professional background spans family dogs, working dogs, handler instruction, behavioral assessment, and advanced canine training in the United States and Europe.
At Monarch, that experience is applied with a different objective: helping owners develop calm, responsive dogs they can understand, manage, and trust in everyday life.
- Experience
Professional Experience That Informs Every Evaluation
Peter’s background includes advanced canine training, dog selection and temperament assessment, handler education, working-dog development, and professional canine training in both the United States and Europe.
That experience allows him to look beyond whether a dog simply knows commands and instead evaluate the complete picture — the dog, handler, environment, training history, and practical goals.

A Broader Canine Background
Before Monarch, Peter’s professional canine work included training, selecting, evaluating, and developing dogs and handlers for demanding working environments.
That experience exposed him to dogs with very different temperaments, drives, training histories, environmental sensitivities, and performance requirements.
At Monarch, those lessons are applied appropriately to family dogs—not by treating pets like police dogs, but by bringing the same attention to clarity, communication, observation, training progression, and real-world reliability into a private family-dog training environment.
Peter's broader professional background includes military and emergency-service experience, environments that reinforced the importance of preparation, clear communication, accountability, and sound decision-making.
- Experience
WHAT THAT EXPERIENCE MEANS FOR MONARCH CLIENTS
01
BETTER OBSERVATION
Peter looks beyond whether a dog simply performs commands. He considers temperament, training history, environmental response, owner communication, household routines, motivation, and behavior patterns when evaluating the dog.
02
MORE THOUGHTFUL RECOMMENDATIONS
Not every dog needs the same program. Monarch recommends training based on the individual dog, the household, the owner’s priorities, and what can reasonably be achieved and maintained.
03
CLEARER OWNER COACHING
Technical training concepts are translated into practical handling that owners can understand and use in everyday life.
The goal is not to make the owner dependent on the trainer, but to give the household a system they can continue after formal training.
04
REAL-WORLD STANDARDS
Training is designed to function beyond the lesson environment.
Depending on the program and dog, training may address household routines, leash walking, guests, distractions, public environments, distance, duration, and increasingly challenging real-world situations.
- THE TRAINING
Clear Training. Honest Expectations.
Peter’s training philosophy is built around clarity, consistency, structure, accountability, and realistic expectations.
Dogs learn best when communication is understandable, boundaries are consistent, progress is developed systematically, and the owner knows how to maintain the work outside formal training.
Monarch does not approach every dog with a predetermined program or promise a specific behavioral outcome before understanding the dog and household.
Training recommendations are based on professional assessment, suitability, safety, owner participation, and the goals that matter most in everyday life.
“The goal isn’t simply a dog that knows commands. It’s a dog you understand, can communicate with clearly, and can trust in the life you actually live together.”
- ACADEMY
A Small Academy by Design
Monarch is intentionally limited in capacity so Peter can remain directly involved in client assessment, program recommendations, training standards, owner education, and the overall quality of each dog’s experience.
The academy is designed for owners who value professional guidance, individual attention, clear communication, and training that is built around the realities of everyday life.
Direct Trainer Involvement
Peter remains personally involved in evaluating client needs and setting the training direction.
Limited Capacity
Monarch intentionally limits enrollment rather than operating as a high-volume training or boarding business.
Owner Education
The training process includes teaching owners how to understand and maintain the work after formal training.
